Women’s Swimming and Diving Competes against Bowdoin in First Meet of 2018

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The UMaine women's swimming and diving team resumed its season after a month and a half off from competition on Saturday, competing against Bowdoin in a non team-scoring meet at LeRoy Greason Pool. The Maine women won nine of the 14 events on the day.
Juliana McDonald won both of the events she competed in, recording times of 54.02 in the 100-yd freestyle and a personal record of 1:57.85 in the 200-yd freestyle for the two wins.
McDonald's first place finish in the 100-yd freestyle was followed by four other Black Bears, as Maine also took the third through six positions in the event. Emma Blair took third (54.91), Ines Khiyara placed fourth (55.96), Emily Borger earned fifth (56.52), while Sabrina Nuttall finished in sixth (57.22).
Emily Lund's time of 5:20.06 was fast enough to win the 500-yd freestyle, among the field of eight Black Bears. Gabrielle Murphy took second (5:26.68), while Chloe Adams earned third (5:27.37). Lund also swam in the 400-yd individual medley (2nd, 4:53.14) and the 100-yd freestyle (4th, 58.15).
Caroline Strolic earned a first place finish, winning the 100-yd backstroke with a time of 1:02.45. Lilli Wiseman (1:05.46) placed third in the event, while Hanna Deschenes (1:06.54) took fourth. In her other three swims on the day, Strolic was the runner-up in the 50-yd backstroke (29.19), third in the 400-yd individual medley (4:53.22), and fourth in the 100-yd breaststroke (1:11.78).
Maine individuals also placed first in the 50-yd freestyle (Emma Blair, 24.53), the 100-yd butterfly (Victoria Kingston, 59.60), the 100-yd breaststoke (Sabrina Nuttall, 1:07.84).
The Black Bears swept both relays, with the team of Megan McGillivray, Nuttall, Rita Chen, and Borger finishing first among the 10 teams in the field with a time of 1:50.29. The Black Bear tandem of Chen, Blair, McDonald and Borger won the 400-yd freestyle relay, recording a time of 3:39.58.
The Maine women's team wraps up the regular season next weekend with a trip to New Hampshire Friday night. The team will then head to Providence the following day to compete against the Friars.
