Lindsley, Gutkes qualify for ECACs

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The University of Maine men's swimming and diving team competed at the Cougar Invitational, hosted at Clark University, on Saturday afternoon.

Jake Gutkes' times in the both the 100-yard fly and the 200-yard fly qualified him for the upcoming ECACs while Spencer Lindsley's mark in the 100-yard fly also made the ECAC cut. Gutkes won the 200-yard fly in 2:01.57 and placed second in the 100 fly at 54.27. Lindsley was fourth in the 100 fly at 55.07.

Shane Kinnon picked up a pair of wins and a runner-up showing. Kinnon took top honors in the 50-yard free (22.05) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.04) while placing second in the 100-yard free at 49.81.

Ben Hebert had a strong showing in the distance events for the Black Bears. Hebert touched the wall first in the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:30.97 and was the runner-up in the 500-yard free (5:04.80).

Connor Mayhew picked up the final swim individual victory for Maine, beating the field in the 200-yard back at 2:02.29. Kevin Clyne was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke at 58.07 and placed third in the 100-yard free (50.28).

Hawthorn Swan-Scott took home third place in both the 200-yard IM (2:09.55) and the 400-yard IM (4:39.45) while Calvin Cleworth was the runner-up in the 50-yard free (22.47).

Stephen Comeau (200-free, 22.95), Tim Edison (200 IM, 2:03.36) and Alexander Watson (1000 free, 10:43.14) each were the runners-up in the events listed.

Freshman diver Kyle Adams continued to impress on the boards, winning two more events for the Black Bears. Adams took home top honors in the 1m (270.05) and the 3m (254.85).

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Adams, Ryan Boll, Mayhew and Jon Maurer won the event with a time of 1:36.10.

Next up for a select number of Black Bears will be competition at the ECACs beginning on Feb. 24.
