Blanca Millan scores a team-high 13 points against the nationally-ranked Bulldogs
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Competing against one of the top teams in the nation, the Maine Black Bears fell to No. 5/3 Mississippi State 83-43, on Sunday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum. The Black Bears fall to the 6-5 after seeing its two game winning streak snapped, while Mississippi State improves to a 11-0 on the season.
Blanca Millan led the Black Bears with 13 points, while Dor Saar recorded eight. Parise Rossignol and Fanny Wadling each added seven points against the Bulldogs. Wadling registered a team-high seven rebounds to lead the Black Bears off the glass.
Maine battled back-and-forth with the 2016-17 national championship runner-up Mississippi State, to open the game as Wadling hit a 3-pointer to open scoring in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs scored nine consecutive points, before the Black Bears went on a 5-2 run to cut Mississippi State's lead to just three at 11-8.
With the score at 14-10 in favor of the Bulldogs, Mississippi State ensued on a pivotal 15-2 run to end the quarter with a 29-12 advantage. The Bulldogs outscored Maine 16-6 in the second quarter to take a 41-18 halftime lead. Mississippi State outscored Maine 38-25 in the second half to seal its' 11th consecutive victory.
Mississippi State was led in scoring by Teaira McCowan notched game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Victoria Vivians added 12 points for the Bulldogs.
Maine will have a quick turnaround, traveling to Durham, North Carolina to battle No. 14/14 Duke on Tuesday night. Tipoff is set to start for 7:00 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
