Swayman Garners Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week Honors

WAKFIELD, Mass. — The Hockey East Association announced Monday that University of Maine freshman Jeremy Swayman has been named the league's Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week after he backstopped the Black Bears to a 5-2 win over No. 18 Boston University on Friday night at Alfond Arena.

Swayman made 40 saves against the Terriers, with 18 of them coming in the third period alone. The Anchorage, Alaska native stopped 10 shots in the first period and followed it up with 12 in a critical second.

The rookie had a key save in the second that returned the momentum to Maine's favor. After the Terriers had cut the Black Bears' lead to 3-2 midway through the frame, Swayman came up big. After Kasper Kotkansalo clanged a shot off the post, the freshman made a beautiful pad save on a follow up attempt from Drew Melanson, swinging his legs high to knock the puck out of midair with his toe.

Swayman sits 3-2-0 on the year with a .919 save percentage and a 2.71 goals against average. This is the second time this season that UMaine has been tabbed for Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors, with Eduards Tralmaks earning a nod on Nov. 6.

The Black Bears are now in Belfast, Northern Ireland to compete in the 2017 Northern Irish Connections Friendship Four Tournament. Maine and Providence will meet in a Hockey East battle on Nov. 24 with the winner advancing to take on either RPI or Clarkson of ECAC Hockey the following night, for a chance to win the 2017 Belpot Trophy.
