UMaine honors 273 student-athletes at 28th annual Scholar-Athlete Ceremony

Since 1989, Maine has awarded 3,785 scholar-athlete medallions to student-athletes
ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine recognized and honored 191 Scholar-Athletes and 82 Rising Stars, a total of 273 student-athletes, for their success in the classroom at the 28th annual Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Monday, Jan. 30 at Wells Conference Center.
One-hundred ninety-one student-athletes were recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average in the previous spring and fall semesters, and/or have maintained a 3.0 or better accumulative grade point average. Eighty-two first-year student-athletes were also honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 GPA or better in their first semester at Maine.
Now in its 28th year, the awards have been presented annually since 1989, with 3,785 medallions awarded.
Since 1989, Scholar-Athlete Awards have been given to student-athletes who have earned a 3.0 or better grade point average in the previous spring and fall semesters, and/or have maintained a 3.0 or better accumulative grade point average.
The award is a medallion, the color of which symbolizes the number of years a recipient has received the award. This year's bronze (first year), silver (second year) and gold (third and fourth year) medallions will be awarded for academic excellence during the 2016 spring and fall semesters.
The 2017 Scholar-Athlete awards ceremony is proudly sponsored by The University of Maine Foundation, The 'M' Club, the UMaine Alumni Association and the University Credit Union.
