Men's Basketball Falls to Hartford on Senior Night

BANGOR, Maine -- The University of Maine men's basketball team failed to complete the season sweep of Hartford, dropping its home contest on Wednesday evening to the Hawks by a final of 82-74.
Freshman Issac Vann led the Black Bears with 23 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists. Vann went 7-for-14 from the field, hitting 3-of-6 from downtown, and pumping in six out of seven free throw attempts. For Vann, it was the third time this season he was able to best 20 points. Shaun Lawton posted 13 points and five rebounds on his senior night while Aaron Calixte tallied double-digits for his seventh-straight game, finishing with 12.
Maine controlled action down-low, finishing with a 34-18 advantage on points in the paint. For the game, the Black Bears shot 41.7 percent (25-60).
Hartford, which outscored Maine 48-33 in the second half, knocked down 12 from 3-point range and was led by Pancake Thomas's 23 points and five triples.
The Black Bears hung on to a one point advantage, 4:35 into the first half before breaking out a 6-0 run. Lavar Harewood's 3-pointer began the sprint which eventually gave the Black Bears a seven point edge.
Hartford answered with an 8-0 run to take a 15-14 lead with 12:01 left in the half.
The Hawks led for the next four minutes before five-straight by Vann and a bucket by Calixte ended a 7-0 Maine run, regaining a three point lead for the Black Bears.
A 7-0 run gave Maine its largest lead at nine late in the half. The Black Bears carried a 41-34 advantage into the break.
Hartford started hot in the second half as it put together a 12-2 run on four 3-pointers to take a three-point lead.
A layup by Lawton with 6:35 to play tied the game for the sixth time.
Hartford had the answer, staging a 10-0 run and elevating its lead out to double-digits with 3:08 to play.
Maine was able to cut the lead to seven on a late jumper by Calixte but the Hawks held on, taking the America East contest by a score of 82-74.
Maine closes out the regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m. when it travels to take on Binghamton.
