Koizar's 30 Points Propels Maine Past Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Sigi Koizar dropped 30 points, her third time besting the 30+ mark this season, to lead the University of Maine women's basketball team to its 10th-straight win; a 60-43 decision at Stony Brook.
Maine produced one of its best shooting days of the year, putting on a second half clinic with a 64.0 percent mark and finishing 26-for-50 (52.0 percent) for the game. Maine assisted on 15 of 26 makes and turned the ball over just six times; its lowest total of the season. The Black Bears outscored Stony Brook 38-24 in the second half.
Koizar, who has now scored 30 or more in two of her last three games, added seven rebounds and four assists and hit 13-of-19 from the field. The junior also knocked down her 71st make from 3-point range this year; a new single-season record at Maine. Mikaela Gustafsson chipped in eight points and six rebounds while Sophie Weckstrom and Chantel Charles each tallied six.
Maine and its sixth ranked defense in the nation held its 10th-straight opponent to under 60 points and have now won nine road games, one shy of last season's total.
The team's took a while to feel out the game flow throughout the first quarter as Koizar's layup with three-seconds remaining in the period gave Maine a 6-5 lead.
A three from Lauren Bodine early in the second quarter jump started a 7-0 run for the Black Bears, giving Maine a 13-6 lead with 7:36 to play in the half.
Stony Brook answered, putting together a 7-0 run of its own to knot the score at 13-13.
Another late bucket from Koizar to closed the second quarter sent the Black Bears into the break with a 22-19 lead.
Maine was able to extend its lead to double-digits late in the second half. Leading by four with 3:28 to play in the third, Maine busted out a 7-2 run. Two layups from Koizar came on either side of a triple by Weckstrom, giving Maine a 39-29 lead.
The advantage grew to 13 before a bucket from Chantel Charles and a 3-pointer from Koizar gave Maine its largest lead of the contest at 18.
Stony Brook was unable to get any closer than 15 the rest of the way as Maine held on for its 13th America East victory of the season, 60-43.
Maine plays its final regular season road game of the year on Wednesday, Feb. 24 when it visits Hartford for a 7 p.m. tip.
