Koizar Leads Maine Over Vermont in Conference Opener

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Sigi Koizar tallied 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals as the University of Maine women's basketball team defeated Vermont by a score of 62-41 on Wednesday evening.
Mikaela Gustafsson finished with 15 points and seven rebounds while Bella Swan went 6-for-10 from the field for 12 points and seven boards.
The Black Bears, who defeated Vermont for the sixth-straight time, went 23-for-63 from the floor and hit 11-of-16 at the free throw stripe. Maine finished with 10 assists, its 14th time reaching double-figures in that category in 16 games, and outrebounded Vermont 47-31. Defensively, Maine held Vermont to only 15 field goals and 41 points; the seventh opponent it has held under 50 points this season.
Maine and Vermont engaged in an even first quarter which saw the Black Bears hold a slight edge after the opening 10-minutes, 17-16.
The visitors settled in in the second quarter as Maine went on a 10-0 run, helped by back-to-back 3-pointers by Milica Mitrovic and Sigi Koizar. The Black Bears outscored Vermont 12-4 in the second quarter and carried a 29-20 lead into the break.
The teams traded hoops early in the third quarter before Maine broke out on a 7-0 run, five coming from Koizar, extending its lead to 38-23.
A 9-0 run for the Black Bears started the second half as Lauren Bodine's 3-pointer put them on top by 20, 56-36.
Maine closed the game on a 6-0 run, taking its largest lead of the game at 21 and capturing its first league victory of the year, 62-41.
The Black Bears put their undefeated home streak on the line when they host UMBC on Saturday, Jan. 9 at noon.
