Wood Leads Women's Basketball Over Binghamton, 52-38

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Liz Wood tallied her 22nd career double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds as the University of Maine women's basketball team improved to 7-1 in America East action with a 52-38 victory at Binghamton.
Maine's defense again proved to be the difference as the Black Bears forced 20 Binghamton turnovers, limiting the Bearcats to a 13-for-41 showing from the field. The Black Bears were able to hold Binghamton to just 38 points, matching a season-best defensive point total for Maine.
Sigi Koizar chipped in 14 points and four assists and now stands just four points from 1,000 in her Black Bear career. Lauren Bodine hit four 3-pointers off the bench for 12 points while Bella Swan chipped in six points and nine boards.
Maine controlled play inside, outrebounding the Bearcats 43-28, including 17 offensive rebounds which turned into a 17-4 advantage in second chance points.
Maine, which led from start to finish, came racing out in the first quarter. The Black Bears held Binghamton to just four points over the opening 11 minutes and outscored the Bearcats 18-4 in the opening quarter. Koizar began the sprint by sticking a three on Maine's first possession. After a Bearcat make, Maine reeled off seven-straight to take a 10 points lead before extending its advantage out to 14 after one.
A 3-pointer by Bodine began the second to give Maine a 17 point edge.
Binghamton refused to let the game get away, putting together a 12-0 run to chip the Maine lead back down to five midway through the second quarter.
The lead grew back to 10 with six-straight points from Koizar before Maine entered the half with a 26-18 lead.
Binghamton kept Maine's advantage in single digits for the first four minutes of the third but the Black Bears closed the period strong. An 11-0 Maine run began with a three from Bodine before the Black Bears took their largest lead of the game, 44-26, on a late bucket from Swan.
Maine's lead never dipped below 14 in the final quarter as the Black Bears picked up their 16th win by a score of 52-38.
Maine returns home to begin the second half of conference play on Wednesday, Feb. 3 when it hosts Vermont at 7 p.m.
