ALBANY, N.Y. -- Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) tossed a two-hit shutout while Erika Leonard (Rocky Hill, Conn.) added a home run as the University of Maine softball team defeated Albany, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Bogdanovich moves to 7-3 on the year after tossing her fourth shutout. Bogdanovich gave up just two hits in Maine's victory over Albany while striking out 10.
Leonard went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Black Bears, blasting her third home run of the spring while EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) added one hit and scored a run.
Maine began its scoring in the bottom of the third when Leonard's solo shot gave it a 1-0 advantage.
The Black Bears tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of an Albany miscue. Fogel started off the inning with a single before advancing to second when Janelle Bouchard (Kennebunk, Maine) drew a walk. A sac-bunt from Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) gave Maine runners on second and third with two outs before Fogel soon scored on a wild pitch.
Bogdanovich and the defense shutdown Albany in the top of the seventh to secure Maine's first America East victory of the year.
Maine's second game on Sunday was cancelled. The Black Bears and Albany will now close their series with a doubleheader on Monday, April 6 beginning at 11:30 a.m.
