Softball Splits Doubleheader with Stony Brook

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine softball team (16-16, 5-3 America East) split its home opening doubleheader with Stony Brook (20-13, 6-2 AE) on Saturday afternoon at Kessock Field. The Black Bears won game one 4-0 before dropping the afternoon finale, 4-0.
EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) drove in a pair of runs with a triple in game one while Rachel Carlson (Tampa, Fla.) finished the day 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Alexis Bogdanovich picked up her 10th win of the year, picking up the victory in game one. Bogdanovich went the distance for the Black Bears, striking out 12 while giving up two runs on three hits and no walks.
Maine jumped on Stony Brook early in game one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on second and third, Fogel roped a line drive over the center fielder's head. Carlson (Tampa, Fla.) and Felicia Lennon (Brookfield, Conn.) came around to score on Fogel's triple.
The Black Bears tacked on a pair of runs in the second, thanks in part to two Stony Brook errors. Maine loaded the bases with two out before Janelle Bouchard sent a ground ball to short. However, the Stony Brook fielder overshot first base with the throw, allowing Bouchard to reach while Carlson and Shelby Obert (Skowhegan, Maine) scored to give Maine a 4-0 lead.
The Seawolves cut the Maine lead in half with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on back-to-back solo home runs by Bria Green and Shayla Giosia.
Bogdanovich and the Maine defense held on the rest of the way, winning game one 4-2.

Stony Brook was early out of the gate in game one, pushing across a run in the top of the first. Giosia drove in her second run of the day when her single brought in Chelsea Evans to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead.
Maine threatened in the bottom of the third when Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) slapped a single through the right side and advanced to second soon after. Carlson's sac-bunt moved Koslosky to third with two away but Stony Brook would escape the jam and hold on to a 1-0 advantage.
The Seawolves padded their lead on Lexie Shue's three-run blast over the left field wall in the top of the sixth, extending the lead to 4-0.
Maine failed to score the rest of the way, dropping game two 4-0.
Allison Cukrov picked up the win, moving to 7-3 on the year after tossing seven innings of shutout ball, scattering three hits and striking out six.
Erin Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) fell to 1-6 with the loss, going six innings while giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits with seven strikeouts. Annie Kennedy (Sound Beach, N.Y.) went an inning in relief, fanning one.
Maine and Stony Brook close its weekend series on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
