Softball Splits Doubleheader with Yale, USF

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine softball team split doubleheader action on Tuesday as it defeated Yale 8-0 in six innings before dropping an 8-2 decision at South Florida.
In game one, the Black Bears used a 10-hit attack along with a two-hitter from starter Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) to defeat Yale 8-0 in six innings.
Maine's offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third. Erika Leonard (Rocky Hill, Conn.) began the rally with an infield single to bring in Julianna Ferguson (Sandwich, Mass.). Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) followed by reaching on a fielder's choice which brought in Sarah Coyne (Newtown, Pa.) before EmJ Fogel's (Vienna, Va.) single to center plated Leonard. The Black Bears kept the offense clicking in the third as Rachel Harvey's (Southington, Conn.) sac-fly was deep enough for Burk to tag and score the fourth Maine run. Shelby Obert (Skowhegan, Maine) would later reach on a costly error by the Bulldogs which allowed both Janelle Bouchard (Kennebunk, Maine) and Fogel to score, putting the Black Bears on top 6-0.
Fogel added a pair of runs to the Maine lead in the bottom of the sixth when her single to the gap in left center scored Felicia Lennon (Brookfield, Conn.) and Coyne, giving Maine the 8-0 run-rule victory.
Alexis Bogdanovich was solid in the circle for the Black Bears as she moved to 5-2 after tossing six innings of shutout ball while surrendering just a pair of hits with seven strikeouts.

Felicia Lennon (Brookfield, Conn.) paced Maine's offense twi two hits and two RBI but the Black Bears were only able to tally five hits as it fell 8-2 to South Florida.
The Bulls wasted no time getting on the board as they pushed across five runs in the bottom of the first. Ann Lee Spivy started the scoring with a three-run blast to right field before Tacoia Williams followed with a solo shot, driving Maine starter Erin Bogdanovich from the game. South Florida added another run in the inning on Astin Donovan's RBI single to the left center.
Maine cut into the lead with a single run in the top of the second when Lennon's single to the gap in left center brought Faythe Goins (Elgin, S.C.) in to score.
USF tacked on a pair of runs with RBI singles by Lauren Evans and Veronica Gajownik to take a 7-1 lead in the second inning.
The Bulls' eighth run came in the bottom of the fifth when Kristen Wyckoff grounded out but Donovan was able to score on the play.
Lennon drove in her second run of the nightcap when her sac-fly to center was deep enough for Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) to tag and score. However, that would be as close as Maine would get, dropping the contest 8-2.
The Black Bears take to the diamond again tomorrow when they take on Central Michigan at 1 p.m.
