Edison, Tirabassi and Gaulin Qualify for ECAC's

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine men's swimming team competed at the Wheaton Invite on Friday and Saturday. The highlight of the meet was Tim Edison (Westford, Mass.), Peter Tirabassi (Lewiston, Maine) and Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) qualifying for the ECAC Championships.
Edison qualified for the ECAC's in the 200 IM in the 200-freestyle. Tirabassi qualified in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, while Gaulin qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Matt England (Bangor, Maine), Peter Tirabassi (Lewiston, Maine), Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) and Nicholas Sundquist (Windham, Maine) placed first with a time of 1:37.57. Maine's team of Connor Mayhew (Waterboro, Maine), Tim Edison (Westford, Mass.), Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) and Kevin Clyne (Salem, Mass.) was a third with a time of 1:41.69.
Alec Penn (Westfield, N.J.) won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:56.06. Benjamin Hebert (South Berwick, Maine) was third in 5:06.69. Alex Tucci (Pittsfield, Mass.) was fourth in 5:06.80, while Connor Mayhew (Waterboro, Maine) was fifth in 5:07.17.
Edison won the 200-yard IM in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:59.28. Sundquist was third in 2:01.37, while Ryan Fahey was fourth in 2:01.73 and Peter Tirabassi fifth in 2:03.03.
Tirabassi won the 100-breaststroke in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:00.60. Gaulin finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:02.25, also good enough to qualify for ECAC's.
Sundquist won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.00, while Tucci was sixth in 57.21. Sundquist also won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.14, while Edison was third in 49.41, Gaulin fourth in 49.42 and Clyne fifth in 49.44.
Maine had an outstanding performance in the 200-yard freestyle, taking five of the top six spots. Edison was first in 1:48.18 in a time that qualified for ECAC's. Taylor Ottman (Morrill, Maine) placed second in 1:49.36. Mayhew was third with a time of 1:50.53, while Penn touched fifth in 1:51.51. Fahey was sixth in 1:51.91.
Phillip Harrison (St. Johns, United Kingdom) was second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.20, while Will Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) was fourth in 57.22.
Penn won the 1,000-freestyle in 10:29.75, while Benjamin Hebert (South Berwick, Maine) was second in 10:31.06.
Tirabassi won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:13.34, a time good enough to qualify for ECAC's.
Fahey won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:02.13, while Tucci was third in 2:06.49.
Clyne was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 22:23, while Gaulin was fifth in 22.84 and Hoffman sixth in 22.87. Jonathan Clapp (Belfast, Maine) placed seventh in 22.93 and Ottman was eighth in 23.07.
Maine's team of Penn, Harrison, Clyne and Clapp touched second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:21.51. Maine's team of Ottman, Sundquist, Mayhew and Hebert was fourth in 3:22.89.
The men's qualifiers will now compete in the ECAC Championships Feb. 27 – March 1 which will take place in Pittsburgh.
