Preview: Women's Basketball Looks for Third-Straight Win, Hosts Colby Tuesday Evening

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (5-3) will be looking for its third-straight when it hosts Colby (4-0) on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.

A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
Maine, which has won four of its last five, finished the Gulf Coast Showcase at 2-1, dropping the opener to Dayton before defeating Missouri St. and LSU. In its most recent outing, Maine held LSU to just 41 points in a 52-41 victory. Chantel Charles led Maine with a game-high 14 points while Liz Wood added 12 points and nine rebounds. Sigi Koizar finished the game with nine points, the first time she had been held to single-digits in scoring this season.
Koizar, named to the Gulf Coast Showcase All-Tournament team and the reigning America East Player of the Week, leads the Black Bears as she is averaging 17.4 points per game. Prior to a nine point outing against LSU, Koizar had scored double-figures in 12-straight games. Koizar is shooting 49.0% from the floor, 48.6% from 3-point range and 82.4% from the free throw line while averaging 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds. Liz Wood is adding 10.6 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (7.6) and steals (3.0) to go along with 3.3 assists. Mikaela Gustafsson has been solid down low for the Black Bears, chipping in 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds and leads the team with a 50% mark from the floor.
As a team, Maine is averaging 59.8 points per game and are giving up 57.0 Maine has held six of its first eight opponents under 60 points. The Black Bears lead the league in assist/turnover ratio (1.40) and total turnovers as they've taken care of the ball and are averaging just 13.3 turnovers per game. Maine is shooting 43.5-percent from the floor, 30.1-percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 73.3-percent from the free throw stripe. The Black Bears are averaging 29.8 rebounds per game and 16.0 assists.
SCOUTING COLBY:
Colby has won its first four games and enter averaging 74.8 points per game. The Mules are led by senior guards Desiree Smith and Carylanne Wolfington. Smith is posting 13.8 points per game while shooting 58.8-percent from the floor. Wolfington is averaging 12.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and a 59.4-percent mark from the floor. Freshman center Emily Davis is adding 7.8 points and leads the team in rebounding (6.3 rpg).
Colby is posting a 46.5-percent mark from the floor, 35.1-percent from behind the arc and 61.8-percent from the free throw stripe. The Mules are averaging 39.0 rebounds and 20.0 assists. Colby has scored 80+ in two of its first four games.
A GLIMPSE INTO THE SERIES:
This will be the 11th all-time meeting between Maine and Colby. The Black Bears hold a 9-1 advantage in the series. The two teams last met in 1986, an 83-45 victory by the Black Bears. The first ever meeting in the series came in 1978 when Maine defeated Colby 82-48. The Black Bears won the first five meetings before Colby got its lone win by a score of 58-47 in 1982.
