Women's Basketball Drops Gulf Coast Showcase Opener to Dayton

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Maine women's basketball dropped a 58-37 decision to Dayton in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Showcase. Sigi Koizar led the Black Bears with 16 points, her 11th-straight game tallying double-figures.
Liz Wood added a double-double, the 19th of her career and her second-straight game achieving the feat, with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Dayton, which entered play averaging 83.0 points per game, was held to its lowest point total of the season. The Flyers totaled 38 of their points in the paint.
Maine was limited to 21-percent from the floor (10-for-47) and hit 12-for-15 from the free throw line. The Black Bears totaled 14 offensive rebounds and each team finished the contest with 33 boards.
Dayton's defense mixed with some hot shooting got it off to a quick start, building a 16-4 lead early on in the second quarter.
The Black Bear offense began rolling as they answered with an 8-0 run. Wood and Koizar hit back-to-back 3-pointers before a jumper from Koizar brought Maine right back within four, 16-12, with 5:23 left in the half.
The Flyers ran their lead back to eight before reeling off 10-straight to close the half and take a 32-14 advantage into the break.
Dayton stretched its lead to 20 early in the third but 3-pointers by Wood and Koizar cut the lead to 38-22.
However, the 16-point deficit would be as close as Maine could get as Dayton took the first round tournament game, 58-37.
The Black Bears will be back in action on Saturday morning when they play the loser of Missouri State and Stanford at 11 a.m.
