Career-High 30 Points from Wood Leads Women's Basketball over Vermont

BANGOR, Maine -- Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) scored a career-high 30 points to lead the University of Maine women's basketball (13-6, 5-1 America East) team to a 74-46 victory over visiting Vermont (3-15, 0-6 AE) on Thursday evening at the Cross Insurance Center.
Maine, which picked up its fifth-straight win, also picked up its largest margin of victory on the season with a 28 point decision. The Black Bears' 74 points were also their most in a single game this season.
Wood's 30-point night was the first in Black Bears' history since Ashley Underwood matched the total on Feb. 7, 2007 against UAlbany. Wood, who hit five 3-pointers in the opening half, finished the game 11-for-20 from the floor with six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Sophie Weckstrom (Espoo, Finland) and Chantel Charles (London, UK) each chipped in nine while Anna Heise (Halle, Germany) added five points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Maine finished the contest 12-for-35 from 3-point range (34.3%) and shot 27-for-60 (45.0%) from the floor. Maine added a season-high 23 assists while turning the ball over just five times and forcing 20 Catamounts mishaps.
The Black Bears' offense took a while to get into a rhythm but 10-straight points from Wood at the 11:32 mark gave the Black Bears a 14-7 edge.
Vermont, who cut the lead down to three at the 9:30 mark, trailed by six with 4:50 left in the half. Maine responded, ending the half on an 11-2, capped on Wood's fifth 3-pointer of the half with six-seconds left, to take a 32-17 advantage into the break.
Wood ended the first half 8-for-12 from the floor, including a 5-for-8 showing from 3-point range, for a 21-point total over the opening 20-minutes of play.
The Black Bears' offense continued its sharp play as Maine's lead extended to 20 on a 3-pointer by Weckstrom, 2:04 into the second half.
Vermont made a 7-0 run to cut the Maine lead back down to 13 with 15:39 remaining.
Maine had an answer as 3-pointers from Charles and Parise Rossignol (Van Buren, Maine) began a 7-3 run to push the lead back to 20.
With 6:19 left to play and Maine still leading by 20, the Black Bears put together a 10-4 run to take its largest lead of the contest, 72-44, on another 3-pointer from Rossignol.
The Black Bears would go on to take the victory, 74-46, for their fifth-straight victory.
Maine continues league action on Sunday, Jan. 25 when it travels to meet UMBC at 1 p.m.
