Stony Brook Rolls Past Maine Men's Hoops, 82-39

BANGOR, Maine – The Stony Brook men's basketball defense held Maine under 40 points for the game as the Seawolves rolled pas the Black Bears, 82-39 in the second game of Maine's four-contest homestand on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Maine to 1-16 and 0-5 in conference while Stony Brook improves to 12-7, and 3-1 in conference.
Only one Black Bear reached double digits in the game as Aaron Calixte shot a accurate 4-of-5 from the field including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc for 11 points. Garet Beal flirted with double-digits with nine points while Till Gloger chipped in eight.
Stony Brook had three players spark the team's offense as Carson Puriefoy poured in 18 points while Jameel Warney and Roland Nyama chipped in 14 and 12, respectively.
The Black Bears were bested on the glass, 39-24 while turnovers were just about even as Maine turned it over 16 times and Stony Brook committed 15 turnovers.
Maine hung with Stony Brook early in the contest after the Seawolves staked a 12-4 lead nearly five minutes into the game.
A trey by Shaun Lawton at the 15:02 mark of the first half cut the lead to just four, 12-6.
Maine cut the deficit even further at the 11:26 mark of the first half as Lawton drained another 3-pointer with the assist going to Calixte. The long-range bucket made it 18-16.
That's as close as the Black Bears got in the game as Stony Brook began building on the lead. The Seawolves got things out to a 15 point advantage with four minutes left in the half capped by a Bryan Sekunda trey.
Stony Brook ended the half up 25, outscoring Maine 13-0 in the final minutes of the frame.
Maine was held scoreless for the final 11:26 of the first half as the Black Bears went to halftime down 41-16.
The Seawolves continued to impose its will on Maine in the second half as the Black Bears managed only 23 points, while Stony Brook managed its first-half output in the final frame, scoring 41 to finish the contest up 82-39.
Maine gets ready for a week in which it plays two doubleheaders with Maine women's basketball, starting against NJIT on Monday, starting at 1 p.m. and concluding with UMBC on Thursday beginning at 8 p.m.
