Football Drops 40-10 Decision at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The University of Maine football team (1-2) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but could not hold on, dropping a 40-10 decision at Boston College (3-1) on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman receiver Micah Wright (Newark, N.Y.) had the lone touchdown for the Black Bears while Dan Collins (Williamstown, N.J.) led the passing attack, going 8-for-13 for 113 yards and one touchdown.
Maine's defense was led by Davonte Burke (Galesville, Md.), Cabrinni Goncalves (Taunton, Mass.) and Christophe Mulumba Tshimanga (Laval, Que.) who each tallied nine tackles. Maine's defense was on the field for a total of 38:50 as the Eagles out-gained Maine 549-139.
Boston College was led by its rushing attack in Marcus Outlow (107 yards) and Tyler Murphy (99 yard, two touchdowns.) The Eagles carried the ball a total of 64 times for 413 yards and four scores.
Maine's defensive pressure proved to be a factor early as the Black Bears were able to sack Boston College on first down of the Eagles' first two drives. Maine's defense came up with another big play early as a Tyler Murphy's pass was tipped on the line and brought down by Maine's Randy Samuels (Bronx, N.Y.).
Maine took over on the Boston College 21. Maine advanced to the Boston College 11-yardline following an Eagle personal foul before Collins found Micah Wright (Newark, N.Y.) on a short slant for a touchdown. For Wight, it was his first career score as a Black Bear.
The Eagles answered with a 10 play, 40 yard drive in which Maine's defense came up big on third down as it was able to hold Boston College to a 40-yard field goal from Alex Howell.
Following a Maine three-and-out, Boston College took over on its own 29. Murphy worked read-option to his right, scampering 71-yards down the sideline for a touchdown as the Eagles took a 10-7 lead.
The Black Bears answered to knot the score after a 67-yard catch and run by Jeremy Salmon (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) eventually led to a 24-yard field goal from Sean Decloux (Ottawa, Ontario).
Boston College regained the lead with a touchdown when Murphy hit Josh Bordner for a 48-yard score. Maine was able to put pressure on the point-after try, blocking the attempt as the Eagles led 16-10.
Howell extended the Boston College lead to 19-10 with a late second half field goal.
Maine began the second half with good field position as Isaiah Jones (Orange, Mass.) took the opening kick-off 35-yards out to the Black Bears' 42-yardline. However, Maine was forced to punt. Boston College put together an 8-minute, 74-yard drive, ending with a two-yard touchdown plunge by Jon Hilliman.
Boston College followed the score with an on-side kick, which it recovered on its own 45-yardline, before Hilliman bounced in once again six plays later to give the Eagles a 33-10 advantage.
The Eagles took a 30-point lead on a 1-yard QB keeper from Murphy with 11:03 left in the second half and would hold on from that point on, taking a 40-10 victory.
Maine will begin Colonial Athletic Association action as it travels to take on Towson next Saturday, Sept. 27. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 PM on Comcast Sportsnet.
