
Maine Indoor Track and Field Impresses at First Home Meet of 2014-15

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine indoor track and field teams kicked off the 2014-15 indoor season with a home meet against New Hampshire, as the squads combined for 14 first-place finishes. The two-day event started with multi events on Friday and finished with track and field events on Saturday, all of which took place at the New Balance Field House.
Along with the first track meet of the year, the squads made this a cancer awareness event, holding a tribute lap before the start of the race as well as tribute cards by fans, athletes and alike hung up around the field house. The track and field team also held a bake sale with proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society.
For the women Robyn McFetters got off to a great start to her junior season as the women's indoor weight throw record-holder notched a first-place finish with a mark of 15.92 (52-02.75). Maine proceeded to place the next three entrants, dominating the event with Emily Boardman (14.79m, 48-06.25), Rachel Bergeron (13.78m, 45-02.50), and Ashely Donahoe (13.62m, 45-02.50) finishing second, third and fourth, respectively.
Jaclyn Masters started her strong day with the pole vault, winning top honors with a mark of 3.50m (11-04.75) while Kayla Marquis finished third with a final mark of 2.60m (8-06.25).
In the long Jump Grace MacLean got off to a strong start with a mark of 5.14m (16-10.50) besting New Hampshire's Emma Checovich (4.95m) and Lauren Perrodin (4.78m), who came in second and third.
Maine continued its dominance in the field events with Donahoe who took first in the shot put with a final toss of 12.75m (41-10.00) and Boardman who came in third with a mark of 10.84m (35-06.75).
Synclaire Tasker finished up the jump events with a second-place finish, recording a jump of 10.69m (35-01.00) and falling just short of the top-spot, notched by Lexi Arbour who finished with a mark of 10.90m.
In the track events, Grace MacLean notched a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a mark 9.42 seconds while Virginia Lavallee took top honors for UNH with a time of 9.23 seconds.
Like MacLean, Masters just missed out on her third first-place finish coming in runner-up to Lauren Perrodin in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.94 seconds.
Naomi Holzhauer also got on the board with a second-place finish in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:13.72, while Masters reeled in her second first-place finish of the day, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.34 seconds.
In Friday's Pentathlon, MacLean defeated a field of eight, finishing in first with 3257 points.
While the Black Bears found some great individual success, Maine came up short in the dual meet with UNH winning, 112-79.
On the men's side, Wilson Adams got things kicked off with a second-place finish in an event he holds the Maine record for, the weight throw, as he recorded a mark of 18.40m (60-04.50).
Devin Burgess excelled in his first event of his sophomore season as he came in first in the pole vault with a mark of 4.35m (14-03.25). Garrett Johnson (3.95m) and Alecsander Wortman (3.95m) came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the long jump Kelby Mace didn't waste much time in recording his first, first-place finish of his Maine career as the freshman came in the top-spot of the long jump with a mark of 6.51m (21-04.25). Maine dominated the event as a whole with Asaad Hicks (6.36m), Julian Hubbard (6.22m) and Burgess (6.17m) taking second, third and fourth, respectively.
Hicks went from second in the long jump to first in the high jump as he notched a mark of 1.93m (6-04.00). Tyler Martin and Connor Harris rounded out the top three with the same 1.93m mark.
Hubbard completed the jump events with yet another first-place finish as he came in with a mark of 14.03m (46-00.50) as Harris (13.20) and Herby Lafortune (13.14m) came in second and third.
In the mile run the trio of Levi Frye (4:21.20), Justin Tracy (4:23.50) and Thomas Salamone (4:25.10) finished second through fourth, respectively. Meanwhile Andrew Toothaker and Michael Lucas took third and fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with identical times of 8.84 seconds.
Joe Viola took first in the 400 meter dash coming in with a time of 50.57 seconds while UNH's Ross Hardy (51.10) and Maine's Lucas (51.48) took second and third.
Scott Merrill notched a second-place finish in the 500-meter run while John Stanhope took second in the 800m with a time of 2:00.68.
Maine's distance runners made their presence felt as Lucas Bourget (8:43.16), Jarrod Lenfest (8:43.83) and Joshua Horne (8:46.48) rounded out the top three in the 800m.
While Maine's 4x800 meter relay team also notched a first-place finish as Stanhope, Salamone, Tracy andi Frye all combined for a time of 8:10.18.
Like MacLean on the women's side, Mathew York took top spot in the heptathlon with a final mark of 4537 points.
The Black Bears nearly pulled out the dual meet win but fell to the Wildcats, 95-91.
Maine will now take a short break before returning to action in 2015 when the squad competes at a road meet against Dartmouth and Vermont in Hanover, N.H. That meet is slated for Jan. 17.
