Maine Men's Hoops Downed by Dartmouth, 74-51

HANOVER, N.H. – The University of Maine men's basketball team was stifled offensively all afternoon as the team scored just 22 second half points as the Black Bears fell to Dartmouth, 74-51 in Leede Arena Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Black Bears to 1-6, while Dartmouth improves to 2-4.
The Black Bears made just seven second-half buckets down the stretch, shooting 26.9 percent while Dartmouth went 11-of-24 in the second frame which proved to be the key difference.
Troy Reid-Knight led the way for the Black Bears with 11 points, five rebounds and one assist. Reid-Knight was the only Black Bear to reach double-figures as Till Gloger and Christian Ejiga both recorded eight as the next highest point producers.
The Big Green had two players register double-figures as Alex Mitola led the team with 18 points while Connor Boehm tallied 15 points.
The Black Bears were victimized in the paint by the Dartmouth forwards, Gabas Maldunas and Boehm who both took down seven rebounds apiece. As a team the Black Bears were outrebounded 41-31. Maine also was edged in the turnover battle 15-13.
The Black Bears kept it close in the game's first 10 minutes as a jumper by Pirovic kept the deficit to just five at the at the 9:57 mark of the first half.
A 12-4 run by the Big Green helped get Dartmouth out to a its largest lead of the half as the squad went up 28-15.
Maine fought back getting that deficit down six as Valjarevic capped the run with a jumper to make it 28-22.
The Big Green finished the stanza on a 12-7 run to go into the break with a double-digit lead, 40-29.
The Black Bears came out strong in the second half, opening with a 9-2 run that had them challenging for the lead with the score 44-38. However Dartmouth's Mitola broke the run with a trey and never looked back, registering 11 second-half buckets to lead the team to the 74-51 victroy.
Maine will be back home on Tuesday when it looks to go 2-0 at the Cross Insurance Center, hosting LIU Brooklyn. That game is slated to tip off at 7 p.m.
