Harvey Leads Black Bears to Win at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at Bates on Saturday afternoon in a dual meet. The women defeated Bates 167-127, while the men's squad fell to the Bobcats 156-138. Senior standout Naja Harvey (Orono, Minnesota) set a pair of pool records on the day for the women's squad. Nicholas Sundquist (Windham, Maine) also set a pool record for the men's squad.
Harvey won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.51, setting a pool record with the time. Abby Linn (Elkhart, Ind.) was third in 1:08.71, while Sammy Mathieu (Oakland, Maine) finished fourth in a time of 1:09.87. Harvey also set the pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:25.71. Linn placed fourth in the event in 2:32.20.
The women's team was victorious in the in the 200-yard medley relay with Harvey, Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario), Emma Pontius (Portland, Maine) and Katerina Mosquera-Cardi (Montreal, Quebec) posting a time of 1:50.61. Maine's team of Linn, Amber Murray (Dover, Foxcroft, Maine), Victoria Kingston (Bradford, Ontario) and Tessa Lindsley (Bath, Maine) placed third with a mark of 1:52.55. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Harvey, Mosque, Emily Borger (Air Force Base, Mass.) and Lindsley captured top honors in 1:38.63.
The Black Bears took three of the top four spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Mosquera-Cardi won the event with a time of 24.76, while Lindsley was third in 25:35 and Borger fourth in 25:42. The Black Bears were also successful in the 100-yard freestyle with Adams placing first in 54:26, Mosquera-Cardi third in 55:00 and Borger finishing fifth in 55:82.
The Black Bears finished first and third in the 200-yard freestyle with Chloe Adams (Davie, Fla.) placing first in 1:57.32, while Sharp was third with a time of 1:58.61. The Black Bears also had three women tally points in the 500-yard freestyle with Adams winning in a time of 5:12.57. Dowd was third in 5:18.60 and Antonia Ulici (Winnipeg, Manitoba) fourth in 5:18.72. Kailey Dowd (Mendon, Mass.) placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:49.00. Courtney Norman (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) was fifth in the event to earn a point for the Black Bears in 11:08.42.
Maine took second, third and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with Murray placing second 1:01.46, Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine) third in 1:02.12 and Kayla Merchant (Sebec, Maine) fourth in 1:03.73.
The Black Bears took the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly. Pontius was first in 58:73, Sharp second in 1:00.12 and Kingston third in 1:00.99. Maine took the top two spots in the 200-yard butterfly as Pontius was first in 2:10.50, while Kingston captured second in 2:12.96.
Maine also earned three of the top four spots in the 200-yard backstroke. Buczkowski was second in 2:14.12, Murray third in 2:15.66 and Merchant fourth in 2:16.97. Ulici was second in the 200-yard IM with a mark of 2:15.60. Pontus was third in 2:15.84 and Mathieu fourth in 2:19.19.
The men's 200-yard medley relay team of Matt England (Bangor, Maine), Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.), Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) and Sundquist placed first in 1:36.72. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of England, Sundquist, Gaulin and Kevin Clyne (Salem, Mass.) was second with a time of 1:27.81.
Sundquist set a pool record winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.08. Lucas Adair (Portland, Maine) was second in 1:48.08. Fahey captured top honors in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a mark of 10:15.03, while Alec Penn (Westfield, N.J.) was fourth in 10:40.21. Sundquist was also first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.90.
England won the 100-yard backstroke in 52.87, while Connor Mayhew (Waterboro, Maine) was third in 56:59. England was also victorious in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.23. Mayhew was second in 1:58.73.
Fahey won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:11.96, while Peter Tirabassi (Lewiston, Maine) was fourth in 2:18.80. Fahey also won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:01.00.
Gaulin was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.53, while Adair was third in 54.01. Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine) was third in the 200-yard butterfly, while Gaulin placed fifth in 2:04.89.
Nick Jensen won the 1-meter diving with a score of 207.00. He was also victorious in the 3-meter diving with a mark of 228.95.
The teams return to action on Jan. 2 when they travel for their winter training trip.
