Maine Falls to #7 UMass Lowell in Overtime 3-2

LOWELL, Massachusetts --- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team fell to #7 UMass Lowell 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night. The Black Bears got goals from Blaine Byron (Manotick, Ontario) and Nolan Vesey (No Reading, Mass.) in the game.
The two teams played through a scoreless first period with the River Hawks holding a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. The defensive play continued into the second period before the Black Bears broke the deadlock with a late goal. On the power play, Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) fired the puck to Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) on the opposite point. He fired a shot that Byron redirected past UMass Lowell goalie Kevin Boyle at 19:05.
UMass Lowell pressured the Black Bears early in the third period with Maine goalie Sean Romeo (Cary, North Carolina) made several key saves to keep the lead.
UMass Lowell tied the game at 7:44 of the third period on a shot from A.J. White from the slot that beat Romeo. Zack Kamrass and Tyler Mueller each assisted on the goal for the River Hawks.
Maine grabbed the lead back at 11:53 when Liam Pecararo (Canton, Mass.) stole the puck from a defender, fed Vesey who fired the puck past Boyle.
UMass Lowell answered just 32 seconds later on a goal by Tyler Mueller. Evan Campbell and White each assisted on the goal.
The River Hawks won the game at 3:57 of overtime on a goal by Michael Louria.
Maine falls to 3-12-1 on the season and 2-6-0 in Hockey East play. UMass Lowell improves to 10-3-3 overall, 7-0-2 in conference play.
Romeo made 35 saves in goal for the Black Bears and falls to 1-8-0 overall. Boyle made 32 saves in goal for the River Hawks and improves to 7-1-3.
UMass Lowell finished the game with a 38-34 edge in shots. The Black Bears were 1-for-4 on the power play, while UMass Lowell was scoreless in two chances.
Maine returns to action when it plays a neutral "home and home" series with New Hampshire. The two teams will play Friday, Dec. 12 in Manchester and Saturday, Dec. 13 in Portland.
