Men's Basketball Routs Husson, 98-58, in Exhibition Action

BANGOR, Maine -- Garet Beal (Beal's Island, Maine) tallied a game-high 26 points, including 18 first half buckets, while four other Black Bears added double-figures as the University of Maine men's basketball team defeated visiting Husson 98-58 in exhibition action Thursday evening.
Beal went 10-for-16 from the floor en route to his 26 point effort while Erik Nissen (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) tallied all 12 of his points in the second half while adding a game-high 13 rebounds for a double-double night. Till Gloger (Bochum, Germany), Ethan Mackey (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and Aaron Calixte (Stoughton, Mass.) also chipped in double-figure scoring efforts.
Husson was paced by junior forward Trevon Butler who chipped in 16 points on a 6-for-14 shooting night. Mitch Worcester and Eli Itkin each added 11 for the Eagles.
The Black Bears racked up 27 assists on 42 makes as they went 51.2-percent from the floor and dominated action in the paint by a 58-16 margin. Maine was strong on the glass, outrebounding Husson 56-38 and dominating play in the paint by a 58-16 scoring margin and racking up a 27-9 difference in second chance points.
Maine came out firing as it raced out to a 14-6 advantage with Beal totaling 10 of the opening points. However, it would be a back and forth first 10 minutes as the Eagles knotted the score at 20-all with 10:16 left in the half.
The Black Bears answered the charge with a 16-5 run to run its advantage to 36-25 with just over three minutes to play in the first half. Maine's offense kept its first half sprint alive as a late jumper from Kevin Litte (Wyandanch, N.Y.) gave the Black Bears their largest lead of the half at 42-27 before taking a 13-point edge into the break.
Husson cut the lead to 10 on a 3-pointer from Trevon Butler to start the second half. Maine answered with a three from Calixte to begin an 8-0 Black Bear run over the next 38-seconds to move its advantage to 52-34.
Midway through the second half Christian Ejiga's (Lagos, Nigeria) soft jumper gave Maine a 20-point lead and soon moved to a 82-52 advantage after a 12-2 run keyed by 3-pointers from Beal and Garvey Melmed (Greenbush, Maine).
The Black Bears offense kept the pressure on as it closed the game on a 16-6 run to take the victory 98-58.
Maine kicks off the 2014-15 regular season on Nov. 15 when it travels to take on Butler at 4:30 p.m.
