Al-Mateen Receives N.E. Football Writers' Gold Helmet Award

ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine senior safety Khari Al-Mateen (Baltimore, Md.) was honored Wednesday with the New England Football Writers' Gold Helmet Award following his performance in Saturday's 33-20 victory over #8 Richmond at Alfond Stadium.
Al-Mateen forced two turnovers in Maine's win, each of which eventually turned into points on the offensive end for the Black Bears. The senior safety tallied a team co-leading eight tackles (five solo) while forcing a fumble and snatching an interception, which he returned for 42-yards deep into Richmond territory.
This gold helmet is presented to the Division I, II and III football player who has established himself for outstanding contributions to his team on the given week. The award is presented at the weekly awards luncheon held at Harvard University.
Al-Mateen is the first recipient of the New England Football Writers' Gold Helmet Award since former quarterback Marcus Wasilewski garnered the honors last season.
Maine continues Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday when it travels for a first-ever meeting at Elon. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
