Women's Basketball Cruises Past McGill in Exhibition Action

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team took a 46-19 lead at the half and never looked back as it defeated visiting McGill 81-41 in exhibition action Saturday evening at Memorial Gym. Lone senior Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) was perfect from the floor, going 7-for-7 en route to a game-high 19 points.
The Black Bears finished the game 55.4-percent from the floor (31-for-56) as preseason all-conference selection Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Sophie Weckstrom (Espoo, Finland) went 4-for-4 from the field for 10 points while Sigi Koizar (Vienna, Austria) tallied eight points and five rebounds.
Maine's defense forced 25 turnovers in the win while the Black Bears were dominant in the paint, outscoring the Martlets 40-8 underneath.
The Black Bears were quick out of the gate as they built a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter. Anderson began a 22-7 run with five-straight points before Weckstrom forced a steal and went coast-to-coast for the lay in. Maine's defense continued to create offensive opportunities as Anna Heise (Halle, Germany) picked up a loose ball from McGill and quickly turned the Martlets' botch into another fastbreak lay-up from Weckstrom to give Maine a 16-point edge with 9:27 to play in the half.
Maine would only allow four McGill points over the final 10:15 in the first half as it closed out the first stanza on a 19-4 sprint. A jumper from Koizar with 6:33 to play pushed the Maine lead to 20 before the sophomore point guard hit two more buckets to extend the lead to 24. Freshman Parise Rossignol (Van Buren, Maine) buried a three from the corner to give Maine a 46-19 lead at the break.
The Black Bears picked up right where they left off in second half as they came out of the locker room and put together a 19-4 run, capped with a three from Anderson, to extend the lead out to 65-23 with 10:24 left.
McGill was able to chop the lead down to 30 but Maine responded, ending the game on a 14-4 run and eventually taking the contest 81-41.
Maine continues exhibition action on Monday, Nov. 10 when it takes on New Brunswick at Cross Insurance Center beginning at 7 p.m.
