Overtime Goal by Hummel Lifts Black Bears to Victory

ORONO, Maine—The University of Maine Women's ice hockey team opened its series against Robert Morris with a 3-2 overtime win this Friday evening. Maine improves to 2-0-0 on the season, while RMU falls to 0-3-0.
RMU took a 1-0 lead at 8:13 in the second period. Jessica Gazzola scored her first goal of the season off assists from Mackenzie Johnst and Ashley Vesci. Emilie Brigham (Anoka, Minnesota) tied the game when she unleashed a shot from the face-off circle at 18:31 that beat Jessica Dodds glove side high.
Audra Richards (Maplewood, Minnesota) passed the puck to Brittney Huneke (Hasting, Minnesota) just in front of the goal. Jennifer More (Delorain, Manitoba) tipped Huneke's shot past the goalie at 2:43 in the third period to give Maine a 2-1 lead.
RMU answered at 7:28 with a goal from Maeve Garvey to tie the game.
The Black Bears won the game in overtime when the puck deflected off the wall to Maine rookie Victoria Hummel (Tull, Austria). Hummel fired the puck into the back of the net past Dodds to win the game. For Hummel, it was her first colligate goal.
Maine outshot Robert Morris 31 to 20. The Black Bears were 0-3 on the power play, while RMU finished 0-5.
Meghann Treacy (Lake Peekskill, New York) had 18 saves and improves to 2-0 on the season. Jessica Dodds had 28 saves and falls to 0-2.
Maine returns to action Saturday October 4th against Robert Morris at the Alfond Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
