
Pontius, Harvey Lead Women's Swimming in Season-Opener

KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Maine women's swimming and diving team opened the season with a 181.5 to 118.5 loss to the University of Rhode Island on Friday night. Emma Pontius (Portland, Maine) and Naja Harvey (Orono, Minnesota) led the way for the Black Bears.
Rookie Emma Pontius won three events for the Black Bears. She captured the 200-yard butterfy in 2:07.33, the 100-yard butterfly in 58.13 and the 200-yard IM in 2:12.25. Naja Harvey was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.67 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:25.12.
Summer Nickerson (Carver, Massachusetts) won the 100-yard backstroke in 59:35. Hayli Weitz (Long Beach, New York) captured to honors in the 3-meter diving with a score 218.70.
The swimming team next competes against Providence on Saturday, Oct. 25.
