Maine Completes Dartmouth Invitational

WHITE RIVER , Vt.- The University of Maine swimming and diving teams completed the final day of the Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday. The women finished sixth with a score of 249, and the men placed fifth with a score of 122.
Both sides started out with a strong finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.), Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Katerina Mosquera-Cardi (Montreal, Canada) took fourth place with a time of (1:51.54) .
Matt England (Bangor,Maine), Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine), John Carlucci (Danbury, Conn.) and Shane Kinnon (Malden, Mass.) took ninth pace for the men in the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.13).
Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) had a strong finish in the 400-yard IM, placing 11th (4:45.88). Bender also grabbed a seventh place finish in the 200-yard back (2:11.87) followed by Kayla Merchant (Sebec, Maine) in 11th.
Smrcina earned a 8th place finish in the 100-yard fly (59.20) Dwyer came in 16th (1:00.23) followed closely by Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) in 17th (1:00.37). Harvey had a strong swim in the 100-yard breaststroke where she grabbed a third place finish at (1:06.73), teammates Smrcina and Abby Linn (Elkhart, Ind.) finished 18th and 19th.
In the diving, Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) took ninth in the one-meter (206.05) and seventh in the three-meter (221.80).
For the men Carlucci touched for eighth place in the 400-yard IM (4:17.82) and grabbed another eighth place finish in the 200-yard fly (2:00.41). England grabbed a 12th place finish in the 100-yard back (54.90), Carlucci finished 18th (55.84).
David Vittori (South Berwick, Maine) touched for 22nd in the 100-yard free (49.70). Hoffman had a strong swim placing 10th in the 200-yard breast (2:16.24), Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) finished 18th (2:21.89).
The Maine women will continue their season with a home meet against UNH on Friday, Jan. 31st at 5pm.
