Fransoso Homers, But Baseball Falls to Binghamton 4-3 in 10 Innings

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) went 2-for-3 and belted his third home run of the season, but Maine fell to Binghamton 4-3 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon in Vestal, N.Y. The teams played just a single game on Saturday and will play a doubleheader on Sunday due to rain on Saturday.
Maine falls to 29-19 on the season, while Binghamton improves to 25-19.
Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) had an infield single and moved to second on an error. He scored when Fransoso doubled down the left field line.
Maine added to its lead in the top of the third inning. Gay singled up the middle and scored when Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) singled to left field.
The Bearcats got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jake Thomas singled to shortstop and scored on a groundout by John Howell.
Maine added a run to push its lead to 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning when Fransoso homered to left center field. It was the third home run of the season for Fransoso.
Binghamton tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, Nick Pancerella singled through the left side. Bill Bereszniewic followed with a single to right field. Both runners scored when Zach Blanden doubled to left field.
Binghamton scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Bereszniewic singled through right side to lead off the inning and scored when David Shanz singled through the right side.
Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) got the start for Maine and went seven innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out six. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) replaced Lawrence to start the eighth inning. He went two innings and allowed one run on three hits. He suffers the loss and falls to 2-1 on the season.
Jake Lambert got the nod on the hill for Binghamton. He went five innings and allowed two runs on nine hits while striking out five. Anthony Grillini replaced Lambert and went two thirds of an inning. Greg Ostner replaced Grillini. He went 3.2 innings and allowed a run on three hits. Mike Urbanski pitched the final two thirds of an inning to earn the victory. He improves to 2-0 on the season.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, May 12 starting at 12 noon.
