ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine's Stanley M. Wallace Pool will be the site of the 2013 America East Swimming & Diving Championships running from Feb. 14 - Feb. 17.
The championships will begin on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 5 PM before a trio of full days. Friday, Saturday and Sunday's competition will start with the preliminary rounds at 10 AM following by each day's finals starting at 6 PM.
The Black Bears will look to build on their 2012 championship performances in which the team's broke a total of 19-school records. Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) enters competition looking to improve on her stellar rookie season at the championships in which she placed second in the 100-yard freestyle and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle. Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) will be considered one of the favorites in the butterfly events after placing third in the 100-yard fly a season ago. Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) and Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) look to lead in the distance events as they are coming off seventh and eighth place finishes, respectively, in the 1650-yard freestyle event at last season's meet. Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.), whose school-record score of 279.65 earlier this season is currently the top three-meter score in the league this season, will compete in both the one and three-meter dives.
On the men's side, the Black Bears will look to get a boost from its underclassmen swimmers as Maine's strong freshman class and newcomers have played a large part in Maine's success thus far. Freshman Matt England (Bangor, Maine) holds the eighth best time in the league in the 50-yard backstroke (25.24) while sophomore Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) will look to build on his ninth place finish in the 400-yard IM a season ago with a school-record time of 4:04.02. Fahey was tenth in the 200-yard backstroke at last season's championships. Sergey Terrio (Oakland, Maine) will compete in the butterfly events for Maine where he holds the tenth best time in the league thus far in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.02). Senior Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) (fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle last season) and junior Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) (11th in the 1650-yard freestyle) will look to lead the men in the distance events.
