Women's Basketball Falls to Green Bay in 'Black Bear Thanksgiving Tournament' Championship

BANGOR, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (4-2) fell in the Championship of the Black Bear Thanksgiving Tournament to Green Bay (6-1) by a score of 66-49 on Saturday. Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) paced the Maine offense as she tallied a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) added 13 points and six rebounds in the Black Bear loss.
Both Wood and Roberts were named to the All-Tournament team following the Championship. Joining the pair on the team were Rashida Timbilla (UMass), Jazmen Boone (William & Mary) and Tesha Buck (Green Bay) while Breannah Ranger (Green Bay) was named the tournament most valuable player.
The first half proved to be a defensive struggle as Green Bay held a thin 4-0 over five minute into the first half. A jumper from Breannah Ranger ran the Phoenix lead to five with 11:45 left in the half before Maine began to chip away.
Chantel Charles (London, U.K.) worked her way inside, laying a shot in while drawing a foul. Maine's ferocious attack in the paint continued as Roberts battled for an offensive board, going back up strong for two, bringing Maine within one 9-8, midway through the first half.
A 5-0 Phoenix run gave them a 14-8 lead before Wood found Roberts cross court for a three-pointer, answering the run and bringing Maine within three.
A Green Bay make on the other end extended the lead back to five before Mikaela Gustafsson (Sodertalje, Sweden) found Wood for Maine's second straight three pointer, cutting the deficit to a pair with 6:59 to play.
Another 5-0 run gave the Phoenix their largest lead of the half, 21-14, with 3:57 left in the opening 20-minutes.
Wood found Charles for a three, and Wood's third assist of the half, to bring the Green Bay lead back to four. However, the Phoenix would end the half on a 3-0 run to take a 26-19 advantage into halftime.
Roberts and Charles paced the Black Bears' first half attack with seven points each as Maine shot 26.9% as a team.
Green Bay opened up the second half on a 14-2 run, stretching its lead to 39-21, before Roberts found Weckstrom for a three to put a stop to the run. The Phoenix continued to pad their lead as Mehryn Kraker hit a jumper in the paint to make the lead 21.
Maine would answer, staging an 8-2 run to cut the lead back down to 15. Roberts started the run when Wood found the senior for a pair. Roberts pulled down a rebound on the opposite end as the Black Bears quickly advanced the ball up court, ending with a three-pointer from Wood. Following a Green Bay make, Sheraton Jones (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) kicked the ball out of the paint to Wood who knocked down her fourth three of the contest, bringing the Phoenix lead to 57-42.
The lead would elevate back to 24 for the Phoenix but Maine would not quit, going on a 7-0 run to close out the game. However, it would be too little too late as the Black Bears fell 66-49.
Maine returns to action when it travels to take part in the Brown Classic. The Black Bears will face host Brown University on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2 PM.
