Football Receives #5 Seed in NCAA FCS Playoffs; Will Host Winner of New Hampshire/Lafayette on Dec. 7

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine football team (10-2, 7-1 Colonial Athletic Association) earned the #5 seed in the 2013 NCAA FCS tournament and will host the winner of New Hampshire/Lafayette on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2 PM at Alfond Stadium, as announced on the NCAA FCS Selection Show Sunday morning on ESPNU. This will be the first time Maine football has hosted a home playoff game in its 121 year history.
Maine, who earns a bye through the first round, will be returning to the NCAA FCS playoffs for the first time since 2011. In 2011, the Black Bears defeated Appalachian State 34-12 on the road in the NCAA second round before falling at Georgia Southern 35-23 in the NCAA quarterfinals. Maine is 3-6 all-time in the NCAA FCS playoffs and have appeared in the postseason six times (1987, '89, 2001, '02, '08, '11).
Looking at Maine's possible opponents, the Black Bears are 43-50-8 overall against longtime rival New Hampshire and 8-2 in history against Lafayette.
The Black Bears had their best regular season in school history, winning 10 games including a 7-1 mark in league play, as Maine was able to lock up the CAA title following a 41-0 rout of Rhode Island. Maine is currently undefeated at home (5-0) for the first time since 2001 and will be hosting its first ever December game at Alfond Stadium.
Tickets will be available via the Black Bear ticket office starting Monday morning.
