BANGOR, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team, led by four double-figure scorers, moved to 2-0 with a 75-65 victory over Bryant (1-2) on Saturday evening. Sigi Koizar (Vienna, Austria) paced Maine with a career-high 16 points along with six rebounds and four assists while Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) added 16 points on a 6-for-10 night from the field.
Maine shot 54.0% from the field while turning the ball over just seven times, the first time since 2007 that the Black Bears had less than 10 turnovers in a game. The Black Bears' bench came alive, outscoring Bryant's bench 50-7 paced by a trio of double-figure bench scorers.
Mirroring last game against North Dakota State the Black Bears mounted a first half comeback.
The Black Bears faced a 14-4 deficit and went on a 12-2 run to even the game at 16-all. Sophie Weckstom (Espoo, Finland) led the charge with two three-pointers to help the Black Bears even the score.
Bryant took the lead again and Roberts took a Mikaela Gustafsson (Sodertalje, Sweden) pass on the left side and laid in a bucket to even the score up at 18-18.
The two teams traded punches as Bryant never extended their lead to more than two points from during the tail end of the half.
A Weckstrom behind the back layup and a Koizar trey at the 1:45 mark of the first half gave the Black Bears their first lead of the game as Maine went up 32-30.
Weckstrom nailed her third three-pointer late in the half to pair with a Anna Heise (Halle, Germany) layup as the Black Bears went into the half up 37-34.
Maine opened up the half as hot as they finished as Roberts drained a 3-pointer from right wing to give the Black Bears a 43-37 lead in the half's first minute.
The Black Bears went on a 12-6 following the Roberts trey sparked Koizar who registered five points on two buckets and a free throw make as the Black Bears led 55-43.
Maine led for most of the half until a Courtney Schissler three-pointer narrowed the gap to 65-62.
Black Bears responded back the next possessions as Gustafsson laid in two points to increase the lead back to five.
Bulldogs kept coming back but Roberts brooke loose on a break following a steal and laid in her sixth field goal of the game as she put Maine up 70-65 with little over a minute left in the game.
A pair of Koizar free throw makes and a Chantel Charles (London, UK) layup helped to give the Black Bears a 10-point lead and close out the contest 75-65 for the team's second win of the year.
Maine looks to move to 3-0 when it travels to face LIU-Brooklyn on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 PM.
