Men's Swimming Starts Season With A Win; Women Fall to URI

ORONO, MAINE- The University of Maine men's and women's Swimming and Diving Teams opened the 2013-14 season on Saturday against the University of Rhode Island. The men's team beat URI 228-54, while the women fell to the rams 165-133. Sophomore David Vittori (South Berwick, Maine) and junior Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) each picked up two wins for the men. Junior Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) picked up two wins and senior Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) added a win for the women.
David Vittori took first place in 50-yard freestyle (23.09) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.61) Senior Brent Williams (Clifton, Maine) took a first place win in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:24:09). Junior Sergey Terrio(Oakland, Maine) had strong showings picking up a first place win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.82) and a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.25) behind freshman Tim Edison (Westford, Mass.) who finished first at (5:06.73). Edison earned first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.09) followed by freshman Keith Chandler in second place (1:04.36).
Ryan Fahey and freshman John Carlucci had strong finishes for the men as well. Fahey swam to a first place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.95) and the 200- yard butterfly (2:00.07) followed by Carlucci who took second place (2:00.30) in the butterfly and took a first place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.19)
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) dominated the diving boards taking first place for the women with a score of 249.45. While freshman diver Ethan Eckhoff finished first for the men with a score of 197.15.
Naja Harvey had strong finishes taking first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:25.39) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.76). Erica Smrcina had a first and second place finish in the 200 yard butterfly (2:11.01) and the 100-yard butterfly (58.59)
Senior Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) had strong showings finishing second in 200-yard backstroke (2:11.78) as well as a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.14).
Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) swam to a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (23.16) followed by Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) in third place (23.49).
Connor Devers (North Attleboro, Mass.) picked up a first place win in the 100-yard butterfly (55.08) followed by Matt England in second place (55.88). England had another second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.17) followed by Devers in third (1:52.18).
Maine placed a first, second, third in the 100-yard backstroke, freshman Will Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) took first place (59.34) followed by Kenny Regan in second (1:00.72) and Joey Quinn in third (1:04.17).
Maine dominated the relays as Taylor Sharp, Naja Harvey, Erica Smrcina and Lauren Dwyer took a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.50). Dwyer, Sharp and Harvey teamed up again with Katerina Mosquera-Cardi (Montreal, Canada) to take first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:40.83).
On the men's side Matt England, Caleb Hoffman, Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine) and Tim Edison finished first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.73).
The swim teams head to Providence Friday November 1st.
