Fantasy Camp a Huge Success

The University of Maine baseball team hosted the fourth annual fantasy camp this past weekend at Mahaney Sports Complex. Twenty-seven participants attended the event ranging in age from 23 years of age to 75. The weekend kicked off on October 11th and culminated on October 13th. During the weekend four games were played. The series ended up in a tie 2-2.
Team Spaulding took an early series lead, taking the first series on the glove of Herb Sargent, the emblazoning speed of Jay Smith and the big bats of Peter Woley and Butch Hall. Team Derba evened the series up in game one of the Saturday double header. Pete Huston threw a flawless three-hitter to launch Team Derba to a much needed victory. Clark Thompson, Cody Johndro and Alex Pate provided all the offense needed to piggy back the excellent pitching performance of Huston. Game three ended in a Team Spaulding victory with a lot of back and forth action. Skip Gordon's defensive prowess helped to solidify the victory for Team Spaulding giving them a 2-1 lead going into Sunday's Game four.
Game four held a bit more excitement, especially after the majority of both teams were nicked up from the previous three games. After a rousing pre-game speech from the honorable John Warden, World Series champion of the Detroit Tigers, the boys were ready to hop, rather limp, back on the field. Game four ended in a victory for Team Derba.
On a note from Coach Trimper, Coach Spaulding and Coach Derba we extend are greatest thanks for the support and turn out to this year's Fantasy Camp. The gentleman that showed up and played showed a high degree of competitiveness and grit. The Black Bear blue was well honored by the men that wore the jersey this weekend. The staff would also like to personally thank Mr. John Warden for taking time out of his busy schedule to bring comic relief to already amazing weekend. Special thanks go out to Herb Sargent, Skip and Kevin Gordon, Jay Smith and Brett Parke for helping organize this event. We hope all that attended will be able to return to next year's event and continue to support the UMaine Black Bears make a move to the top of the America East Conference and back onto the National Stage.
