
Swimming & Diving Compete Against Bowdoin; Capossela Sets Pair of Diving Records

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine swimming & diving teams competed in a non-scoring meet against Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon at Wallace Pool on Senior Day for the Black Bears. Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) had a stellar day on the diving boards as she broke the school records in both the one-meter (265.75) and three-meter (279.65) events.
Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) led the women's squad with a pair of wins as she took home first place in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.61) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.01). Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) also picked up two wins as she won the 50-yard freestyle (25.27) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.85).
Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) finished first in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:01.77 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.76. Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) took home first place in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:13.76 and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle at 25.49. Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.30 and finished second in the 200-yard IM at 2:15.45.
Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario) took first in the 400-yard IM at 4:57.64 while Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.94. Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) picked up a pair of second place finishes as she was second in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.48) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.15).
Capossela won both diving events with record setting marks. The junior diver took first in the one-meter with a record score of 265.75 and won the three-meter with a record score of 279.65.
On the men's side, Shane Kinnon (Malden, Mass.) picked up a couple wins as he took first in the 100-yard backstroke (56.51) and won the 200-yard IM (2:04.24). Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) won both the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.72) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.75). Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) won the 100-yard freestyle at 50.27 and was third in the 100-yard IM at 57.20.
Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine) took home second place in both the 400-yard IM (4:30.12) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.25). David Vittori (South Berwick, Maine) took home second in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:49.00 and was third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.51. Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.11) and finished third in the 200-yard IM (2:08.30).
Travis Wibby (South Portland, Maine) placed second in a pair of events on the diving boards. Wibby placed second in the one-meter with a score of 234.05 and was second in the three-meter at 228.30.
In the relay events, Bender, Harvey, Dwyer and Sharp combined to win the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:04.92 while Samantha Mathieu (Oakland, Maine), Trodden, Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.) and Harvey teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:41.16.
On the men's side in the relays, Kinnon, Hoffman, Gaulin and Robbie Bickford (Old Town, Maine) won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.16.
The Black Bears return to the pool on Jan. 25 when they take part in the two-day Dartmouth Invitational.
