Women's Ice Hockey Has 12 Named to Hockey East All-Academic Team

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team had 12 of the 86 student-athletes named to the 2011-2012 Women's Hockey East All-Academic Team on Thursday. In addition, Katy Massey (Waterville, Maine) was named one of two Hockey East Top-Scholar Athletes. Massey and Ashley Norum (Fairbanks, Alaska) were two of the six student-athletes named to the 2011-2012 Hockey East Academic All-Star Team.
Massey posted a perfect 4.00 grade point average during her first two semesters at Maine. She shares the Hockey East Top-Scholar Athlete honor with Vermont's Megan Dalbec, who also achieved a perfect 4.00 GPA. Massey was one of the three forwards named to the Hockey East All-Star Team, which honors that top grade point averages by position. She was joined by defenseman Ashley Norum, who earned a spot on the team for the second straight season.
Maine had 12 student-athletes honored on the Hockey East All-Academic Team. The 12 ranked tied for second most in the league with Connecticut. Providence College led the way with 16 student-athletes honored.
Norum and Melissa Gagnon (St. Gilles, Quebec) were named two of seven Hockey East Distinguished Scholars, for posting a 3.0 grade point average during each of the semesters during their four year careers.
Myriam Croussette (Baie-Comeau, Quebec), Dawn Sullivan (Enfield, Nova Scotia) and Chloe Tinkler (Wabush, Newfoundland) were honored for the third time in their careers.
Dominique Goutsis (Coquitlam, British Columbia), Kayla Kaluzny (Calgary, Alberta) and Kelly McDonald (Ancaster, Ontario) received recognition for the second time in their careers.
Brianne Kilgour (Hamilton, Ontario), Katy Massey, Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) and Nikola Tomigova (Smrzice, Czech Republic) were named to the All-Academic Team for the first time in their careers.
Each of the student-athletes named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods during which she was actively competing. The Women's hockey East Association is an eight-team, Division I college hockey conference which began play in 2002-2003 with offices based in Wakefield, Mass. The league also sponsors a 10-team men's league which began play in 1984.
