Softball Falls in Game One to Boston University 2-1 in 12-inning Marathon

ORONO, Maine -- With the Black Bears down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh, Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) ripped an opposite field home run over the left field fence to tie things up at 1-1, sending the game into extra innings. However, the Terriers were able to plate a run in the top of the 12th and hold on to the 2-1 victory. Ashley Kelley (Hermon, Maine) pitched the full 12 innings for Maine as she gave up just two runs on six hits while fanning six.
Boston University started the scoring in the top of the third when they plated a run to take a 1-0 lead. Melanie Delgado led off the inning with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on a single to short from Jayme Mask. Erica Casacci's slow roller to second base ended in a fielder's choice, allowing Delgado to score from third.
With the Terriers leading 1-0 and two away in the bottom of the seventh, Stevens stepped in as a pinch hitter and launched a laser over the right field fence to tie things up and send the game into extra innings.
Each team would trade rallies and solid defensive efforts until the Terriers were able to plate a run in the top of the 12th inning. Emily Felbaum started the inning with a double down the right field line and moved over to third following a sac-bunt by Emily Roesch. Delgado then grouded out to first base while Felbaum scored on the play, giving Boston University a 2-1 lead.
Maine looked primed for another come back as Margaret Hilton (Lyndonville, Vt.) started a two out rally with a single to short. Lindsey Jenkins (Greenwich, Conn.) moved Hilton into scoring position with a single up the middle but the Terriers would end the rally there and take the game 2-1.
Whitney Tuthill picked up the win in relief for the Terriers as she pitched the final two innings while giving up three hits. Holli Floetker pitched the first 10 innings for Boston University as she allowed one run on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
