Softball Drops 8-0 Decision at Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University of Maine softball team dropped an 8-0 decision in five innings to complete its three game weekend series at Albany on Sunday afternoon. The loss slips Maine back to 6-22 overall and 0-3 in league play while the Great Danes climb to 18-7 and 5-1 in conference action. EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.), Jennifer Eberhardt (Glendale, Ariz.) and Dagmar Ralphs (O'Fallon, Ill.) each picked up a hit for Maine.
The Great Danes jumped out to an early advantage as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Lauren Alcorn began the scoring as she reached on a fielder's choice while Vicky McFarland scored on the play. Albany then put across six runs with two outs away in the inning. Kylie Apostolina cleared the bases, driving in three runs on a double into center field. Alexa Toole then drove in Apostolina with a RBI double of her own into right field. McFarland drove in the final Great Dane run of the inning when her single into right field plated Diane MacDowell.
Albany added a run in the bottom of the second when Charlise Castro belted a home run over the right field fence.
The Black Bears looked to close the gap in the top of the fourth as Nikki Byron (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) worked a one out walk. Stephanie Wood (Florence, N.J.) pinch ran for Byron and was able to move herself into scoring position after she stole second. However, Albany would get out of the jam without any harm being done. Maine would keep battling but fell in the end 8-0 in five innings.
Beth Spoehr (Appleton, Wis.) takes the loss for Maine as she falls to 2-6 on the year. Ashley Kelley (Hermon, Maine) pitched well in relief as the senior went 3.1 innings while giving up one run on three hits while fanning three.
Brittany MacFawn picked up the win for Albany as she went the full five innings for the shutout after scattering three hits and striking out 10.
The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday as they travel to battle Husson in non-conference action before hosting Boston University for a three game set beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 PM.
