NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The Black Bears were unable to hold on to an early 3-0 lead as they fell 12-3 to Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday in day two of the Northridge Classic. EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored while junior Hilary Kane (Concord, N.H.) drove in two while going 1-for-3.
Maine wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they jumped out for three runs in the top of the first inning. Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) began the rally by working a leadoff walk. Fogel and Dagmar Ralphs' (O'Fallon, Ill.) back-to-back singles loaded things up for Maine with nobody out. Kane followed with a single into left field, plating Koslosky and Fogel while Ralphs advanced to third. Jennifer Eberhardt (Glendale, Ariz.) drove in Maine's third run of the inning with a sharp single left, scoring Ralphs.
The Roadrunners got one back in the bottom of the second as Sara Smith started things with a one out triple to right center. Myshayla Fryer's sac-fly to right field allowed Smith to tag and score from third.
Bakersfield took an 8-3 lead with a seven run bottom of the third. Amy Ricciardi's one out double drove in Karissa Veiga and Laura King to start the rally. Later on in the inning, Emily Bliss blasted a three-run homer, giving the Roadrunners a three-run advantage. King's single with two down in the inning plated Bree Sandoval and Ashley Carter with Bakersfield's seventh and eighth runs of the day.
The Roadrunners tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Veiga led off the inning with a single before Ricciardi's double down the left field line gave Bakersfield runners at second and third with no outs. Fryer's single into center field allowed both Veiga and Ricciardi to come around and score. Bliss followed up Fryer's two-RBI single with a two run homer to left center, giving the Roadrunners a 12-3 lead.
Maine was unable to cut the deficit inside eight runs, falling 12-3 in five innings to the Roadrunners.
Ashley Kelley (Hermon, Maine) takes the loss for Maine as the senior went 2.2 innings while giving up six runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.
The Black Bears close out the Northridge Classic with a doubleheader beginning with a 2:30 EST matchup with Harvard before facing Cal State Northridge in the finale for Maine at 5:00 EST.
