Men's Basketball Rallies, But Falls Short at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Maine men's basketball team came back from a 15-point first half deficit to cut the lead to one, but Stony Brook was able to outlast the Black Bears for a 55-48 win. Maine falls to 12-16 overall and 6-10 in America East play while Stony Brook improves to 20-8 and 14-2. Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) led Maine with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Seawolves took a quick 5-1 lead before Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) found Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) in the corner for a three.
Maine was down 15-4 but Edwards drove to the hoop drawing three defenders and found Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) for an open jumper.
The Seawolves made the next two baskets, but Xavier Pollard (Bronx, N.Y.) made a nice drive to the basket splitting a pair of Seawolves defenders for a layup.
Stony Brook went on a 7-to-3 run, but Maine went on an 8-to-2 run of its own to cut the lead to 28-19 on a pair of McLemore free throws with just under four minutes remaining.
The Black Bears continued to claw their way back, and a Fraser layup from Edwards made it 30-24 at the half.
Fraser led Maine with eight points, three rebounds and two assists in the first half. Maine shot 34.6 percent in the first half while Stony Brook shot 40.6 percent.
The teams exchanged baskets to open the second half, and Maine cut it to 34-30 on a nifty Fraser turnaround jumper from in close.
McLemore then got fouled on a three and made all of his shots from the charity stripe, cutting the lead to 36-35 with 13:10 left.
The Seawolves went on a 10-to-4 run expanding the lead 46-39 with 8:32 left, but Edwards drove by his defender and rose up over two others for a layup.
Following a Stony Brook basket, Kilian Cato (Espoo, Finland) and Edwards converted buckets to make it 48-45.
The Seawolves held a 51-45 lead with just over a minute remaining, but Cato swished a three from the corner to make it a one-possession game.
Bryan Dougher made a free throw to put Stony Brook up four, and the Black Bears had a layup just miss. Stony Brook made free throws to put the game just out of reach of Maine.
Edwards finished with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists while Cato added eight points.
Maine shot 32.1 percent while Stony Brook shot 37 percent.
Fraser earned Maine's Player of the Game honor Dallis Joyner was Stony Brook's with 12 points and six rebounds.
