Late Rally Propels Maine Past Stony Brook on Senior Day

ORONO, Maine -- The Black Bears used a late rally to overcome a seven point deficit and eventually took a lead with a little over a minute left that it would not relinquish as Maine closed out senior day with a 45-40 win over visiting Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) paced the Maine attack as the senior totaled a game-high 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists to earn her Maine's America East Player of the Game. The win moves Maine to 7-22 and 4-12 in America East play while the Seawolves fall to 4-25, 1-15 in league action.
Fellow senior Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) added nine points and nine rebounds while Danielle Walczak (Lee, N.H.) chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
Tamiel Murray had eight points and seven rebounds for Stony Brook, earning her the Seawolves' America East Player of the Game.
The Black Bears trailed early to Stony Brook but were able to piece together a 10-0 run to take a 10-5 advantage midway through the second half. Trailing 5-0, Williams hit a jumper which was followed by a pair of Walczak baskets. After Baranowski netted two free throws, Amber Dillon (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) pulled up and knocked down a jump shot, giving Maine a five point edge.
Stony Brook answered, breaking out an 8-0 run over the next 2:23 to regain the lead at 17-14. The game remained tight until the half as Williams' jumper sent the Black Bears to the locker room trailing 21-19 at the break.
Maine responded out of the break by knotting things up on back-to-back free throws from Rebecca Knight (Alfred, Maine). A three by Williams regained the lead for Maine at 24-21 just three minutes into the second half.
A 12-2 Seawolves run over a 4:39 span gave Stony Brook its biggest lead of the contest, 39-32, with 7:30 to play in the second half.
Maine cut the lead to just two when the two post teamed up for a basket after Walczak found an open Baranowski on the block for a pair. Baranowski then kicked the ball outside to Williams who knocked down another three to bring Maine within two, 39-37, with three minutes to play.
Stony Brook extended its lead to three on a jumper by Jessica Previlon before the Black Bears answered with a jumper from Williams. Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) then ripped down a defensive board and hit a jumper on the opposite end to give the Black Bears the lead once again, 41-40. Walczak and Anderson each hit a pair of free throws for Maine down the stretch to seal the deal as the Black Bears took the America East contest 45-40.
Maine and Stony Brook each return to action on Thursday, March 1st when they meet in the opening round of the 2012 America East Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at the Chase Family Pavilion on the campus of Hartford.
