Day One of America East Championships Complete

BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Maine swimming and diving teams completed day one of the America East swimming and diving championships on Thursday evening. The Black Bears had solid showing in the relay events on day one as the women's team broke a pair of school-records, setting new marks in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. After one day of competition, the men's team is in third place with 71 points while the women are in sixth with 54 points.
The women's team kicked off the relay events by setting a new school-record mark in the 800 yard freestyle relay with a new record time of 7:38.22. The new mark broke the old record of 7:43.45 set in 2008. Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.), Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario)), Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) and Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.) set the new record-setting pace for Maine.
The men's team followed with a fourth place showing in the 800-yard free relay at 6:57.59. Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.), Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.), Robbie Bickford (Milford, Mass.), Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.), swam the event for the Black Bears.
On the women's side, another record was broke as the women set a new mark in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:45.63. Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.), Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) teamed up to set the new mark for the Black Bears, breaking the old mark of 1:47.16 set last season.
The men's team placed third in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:35.91, missing out on the school-record by just .02. Swimming the event for the Black Bears were Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine), Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.), Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) and Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine).
Day two of the America East Championships gets underway with preliminary action beginning at 10 a.m. from the Boston University Aquatic Center.
