Men's Basketball Falls at Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Maine men's basketball team fell at Hartford by the score of 64-50 on Wednesday night at Chase Arena in West Hartford, Conn. With the loss Maine falls to 11-14 overall and 5-9 in America East play while Hartford improves to 7-19 and 7-7 in league play. Xavier Pollard (Bronx, N.Y.) earned Maine's Player of the Game honor with 10 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Hartford took a 15-7 lead seven minutes into the contest before Pollard had a nice take, driving baseline and beating a defender to the basket for a layup.
The Hawks went on a 7-to-2 run taking a 22-11 lead with 7:47 left, and expanded it to 30-13 with just under four minutes to play as Hartford made six out of their first 12 shots from long distance.
Pollard again gave the Black Bears a boost as he drove in traffic, made a layup and got fouled. The free throw made it 30-17 with 1:20 left and that's how it went into halftime.
Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) led Maine with six points and six rebounds while Pollard had six points, two rebounds and a steal.
Maine shot 25.0 percent from the field in the first stanza while Hartford shot 37.9 percent. The Hawks were 6-for-15 from three-point range while Maine was 1-for-7.
After falling behind 48-29 with just over nine minutes left in the game, the Black Bears would score six-straight points courtesy of Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) and Andrew Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) three-pointers, with each assisting on the other.
The Black Bears eventually got within 12 at 58-46 with 3:02 left courtesy of a nice dish down low from Pollard to Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) for an easy layup.
Maine continued to battle, but Hartford had an answer every time.
Maine finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field while Hartford shot 45.5 percent. Hartford went 8-for-21 from three-point range while Maine was 5-for-17.
Allison finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
