Women's Basketball Bounces Back Into Action on Dec. 30 at Towson

TOWSON, Md. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (1-10) looks to remain undefeated in its all-time series against Towson (5-5) as it travels to battle the Tigers on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 2 PM. The Black Bears enter the contest at a perfect 13-0 all-time against Towson.
The Black Bears continue their current their current eight game road swing with the sixth game away from Alfond Arena. Maine, currently in the midst of a seven game losing skid, enters the game averaging 51.3 PPG while shooting 35.5% from the field. Maine is averaging 26.0% from long range and 65.7% from the free throw line while pulling down 35.8 rebounds. Maine dishes out 12.0 assists per game while swiping 6.9 steals. Last time out, the Black Bears fell at James Madison 88-34. Maine made six of its first seven shots in the opening half but scored just 10 points in the second half. Danielle Walczak (Lee, N.H.) led Maine in the contest with nine points and five rebounds.
Junior guard Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) leads the Maine offense against as she is leading the team in points per game (10.9) and steals 1.2 and is second in rebounds (4.6) and assists (2.1) while shooting 41.2% from the field. Walczak is chipping in 7.9 points and 4.4 rebounds and leads the team with a 45.2% mark from the field. Freshman Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) is averaging 7.2 PPG and leads the Black Bears in rebounding at 5.2 per game. Wood currently ranks second in the America East in freshman scoring and leads the Black Bears with 13 three-pointers. Anna Heise (Halle, Germany) is netting 6.4 PPG with 3.5 rebounds and leads the team with a 78.3% mark from the free throw line. Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) is tallying 4.7 PPG with 3.1 rebounds while Sophie Weckstrom (Espoo, Finland) is averaging 2.8 PPG and a team-high 2.3 assists.
The Tigers enter today at 5-5 overall but just 1-4 in their last five games. Towson is coming off a 69-61 win over Delaware State in which Ciara Webb totaled 22 points to lead the Tigers in the win. This contest will be Towson's fourth straight home game at the Towson Center. Towson is led by Tanisha McTiller who is averaging 16.2 points per game. McTiller also leads the team in assists (4.1), steals (2.5) and ranks second in rebounding at 5.9 per game. Michelle Peebles is chipping in 8.7 PPG while pulling down 4.6 rebounds and leads the team with 12 blocks while shooting 51.5% from the field. Ciara Webb nets 7.1 PPG with 2.6 rebounds while Nyree Williams is adding 7.0 PPG and a team-high 7.5 rebounds. As a unit, the Tigers are averaging 57.3 PPG while giving up 61.7. Towson shoots 37.2% from the field, 29.4% from beyond the arc and 63.9% from the free throw line. The Tigers pull down 40.3 rebounds per game, besting its opponents by a +3.3 margin.
This will be the 14th meeting between Maine and Towson as the Black Bears are currently undefeated at 13-0 against the Tigers. Towson, a past member of the America East conference, and Maine first met on Jan.4, 1996 a game won Maine 81-67. The Black Bears won the next 11 matchups throughout the years until the last meeting on Jan. 27, 2001 in which Maine was victorious by the score of 53-41.
