Women's Basketball Falls at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, VA. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (1-10) held tough throughout the first half with James Madison (5-6) but fell in the end by a score of 88-34. Danielle Walczak (Lee, N.H.) led the Maine attack with nine points and five rebounds while Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) and Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) each added seven.
James Madison had six scorers in double figures as Tarik Hislop paced the Dukes with 14 points while Kirby Burkholder added 13. Maine shot 31.1% from the field while James Madison went 32-for-66 (48.5%), including a 60.7% mark in the second half.
Maine matched the Dukes hoop for hoop throughout the opening minutes of the contest as the Black Bears made six of their first seven field goals. With the game tied at 14 just over seven minutes into the first half, James Madison rolled off seven unanswered points in an 18-second span to take a 21-14 lead. The Dukes completed their 12-0 run at the 9:38 mark to gain a 26-14 advantage.
Maine responded with a 7-2 run of its own to cut the lead once again to single digits. Sophie Weckström (Espoo, Finland) found Chantel Charles (London, England) for a basket before Roberts' layup cut the lead to eight. After a Duke hoop at the opposite end, Charles knocked down a three from the left corner to cut the Duke lead to 28-21.
James Madison ended the first half on a 12-2 run to take a 16 point advantage into the half, 40-24.
Walczak paced the Maine attack in the opening half with a first half high nine points to go along with five rebounds while Wood added five points and three rebounds. The Black Bears shot 10-for-24 (41.7%) in the opening half.
James Madison built a 50-24 lead with a 16-0 run which continued from the first half. Wood ended the Dukes' rush with a pair of free throws at the 13:45 mark.
The Black Bears were unable to chip into the James Madison lead as the Dukes broke out on another extended 19-0 run to run its lead to 76-30 with 4:22 to play in the second half.
Maine kept the pressure on but failed to close the gap, dropping the contest 88-34 to the Dukes.
Maine returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 30 when it travels to Towson at 2 PM.
