
Men's Swimming & Diving Squad Wins URI Invitational; Women Place Fourth

KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Maine men's swimming and diving team took first place honors at the URI Invitational while the women placed fourth. The men scored 771 total points, narrowly defeating both Bryant and Providence by two points while Holy Cross placed fourth and Rhode Island finished fifth. The women's squad placed fourth with 590 total points as Rhode Island won the women's invitational.
On the men's side, three Black Bears picked up individual wins. Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) won the 100-yard butterfly event with a time of 53.33 while also tying for third in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:01.41. David Vittori (South Berwick, Maine) won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:07.87 and placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:48.55. Matt England (Bangor, Maine) touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.50), second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.46) and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.23).
Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) placed second in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:17.98 and was fifth in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:00.56. Sergey Terrio (Oakland, Maine) touched the wall second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.36) and tied for sixth in the 100-yard fly at 54.48. Brent Williams (Clifton, Maine) took home third place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:19.76 and was fifth in the 400-yard IM at 4:27.64. Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine) finished third in the 100-yard backstroke at 55.62 and was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.20.
Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) placed fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:23.20 and was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.51. Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) finished fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:16.56 and was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.92.
Travis Wibby (South Portland, Maine) finished fourth in the one-meter dive with a score of 206.05.
Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) led the women with a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (58.45) and a fourth place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.52.). Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.10) and was fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.96).
Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:46.96 while Courtney Norman (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) finished sixth with a time of 10:55.22 in the same event.
Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) finished seventh in the 400-yard IM at 4:46.42 and was eighth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:13.34. Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) placed eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.10) and tenth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.58).
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) won the three-meter dive with a score of 243.25 while Ashley Higgins (Bangor, Maine) finished third with a score of 162.00.
In the relay events, Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine), Harvey, Smrcina and Trodden placed second in the 200-yard medley at 1:50.94 while Trodden, Buczkowski, Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.) and Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) combined for a fourth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
On the men's side in the relay events, England, Hoffman, Gaulin and Bickford teamed up to take second place in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:40.10 while England, Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine), Bickford and Terrio placed fourth in the 400-yard freestyle at 3:20.14.
The men's and women's swim teams return to action on Saturday, Dec. 8 when they travel to face Bates College at 1 PM.
