Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Both Third After Day One of URI Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams both finished day one of the URI Invitational in third place. The men's team scored 240 points on day one while the women tallied 209.
David Vittori (South Berkwick, Maine) and Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) had the top individual finishes on the men's side as each placed third in his own respected event. Vittori took third place in the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.71) while Fahey was third in the 200-yard IM (2:00.06).
Following Vittori in the 500-yard freestyle was Brent Williams (Clifton, Maine) in fourth place at 4:5898 and Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) in fifth at 4:59.37. Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) placed fifth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:02.92 as Connor Devers (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished sixth at 2:03.36. Sergey Terrio (Oakland, Maine) placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.00 while Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine) finished ninth in the same event at 23.08.
Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) recorded the top individual finish on the women's side as she placed fifth in the 200-yard IM (2:12.20.) Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle at 24.92 and was followed next by Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) (25.10) and Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine) (25.25).
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) led the women on the diving board with a second place finish in the one-meter dive (248.00) while Ashley Higgins (Bangor, Maine) finished fifth with 186.85. Travis Wibby (South Portland, Maine) paced the men on the boards with a fifth place finish in the three-meter event (191.00).
In the women's relay events, Dwyer, Harvey, Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) placed third in the 400-yard medley with a time of 4:00.04. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Harvey, Trodden, Dwyer and Buczkowski teamed up to place third at 1:39.49.
On the men's side, Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Devers, Gaulin and Bickford placed fifth in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:43.39. Quinn, Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine), Terrio and Dwyer placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.68.
Both teams return to action tomorrow as they finish the final events of the URI Invitational beginning at 10 AM.
