
Men's Basketball Falls to Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds but the University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Dartmouth in its season opener by the score of 67-54 on Saturday evening in Hanover, N.H. Maine is now 0-1 and Dartmouth goes to 1-0.
Maine fell behind early 8-1, but an 11-to-4 run courtesy of six Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) tied the game.
The Black Bears continued the run to take a 19-14 lead on a pair of Xavier Pollard (Bronx, N.Y.) free throws with 8:28 left in the half.
Dartmouth responded to know the game at 19, but an Allison dunk and Pollard layup gave Maine a four-point edge.
However the Big Green closed the half on a 9-to-3 run and took a 28-26 lead at halftime.
Dartmouth opened the second half on a 12-to-2 run and had a 40-28 lead less than five minutes into the second half.
Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) scored on a layup and Allison notched a layup and the foul to cut into the lead. A Shaun Lawton (Harlem, N.Y.) layup moments later made it a five-point lead.
Dartmouth answered with a 10-to-3 run and had a 12-point lead with eight minutes to play.
Maine continued to try and chip away, but would get no closer than 11 the rest of the way.
Edwards finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals while Pollard added 10 points, four rebounds and four steals.
Maine held a 36-32 edge in rebounding, but shot 35.2 percent from the field to Dartmouth's 45.8 percent.
Gabas Maldunas led Dartmouth with 25 points and nine rebounds.
Maine returns to action on Wednesday at Holy Cross.
