Black Bears Fall Short of Vermont

Orono, Maine – The University of Maine women's swimming and diving team competed against Vermont on Saturday afternoon. Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) won two events for the Black Bears while Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) swept the diving events. Maine lost to Vermont by a score of 160 to 137.
Harvey placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke at a time of 1:06.59 and was first in the 200-yard breaststroke 2:27.34. Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.13 and also took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.54. Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) was third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.11, second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.37, and second in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:43.98. Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) took second place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:15.91 and third in the 1000-yard freestyle with a 10:50.09 time. Courtney Norman (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) saw a fourth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.17 and a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:18.37. Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) took third place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.44 and third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:11.43.
Capossela swept the diving events as she placed first in both the one-meter (229.28 and the three-meter (245.62).
The Black Bears return to the pool on November 30 as they are scheduled to take part in the two-day URI Invitational in Kingston, Rhode Island. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM on November 30 and 10:00 AM on December 1.
